LELAND, NC (WWAY) -- People no longer need to worry about slamming on the brakes around the intersection near a new park behind Walmart in Leland. The change came after WWAY investigated the problem.

Two days after we covered a story at what the town manager called a "dangerous intersection," a stop sign is now up.

The intersection of Westgate Drive and Oceangate Drive had no traffic signs, until someone put a stop sign up Thursday.

It has neighbors feeling safer. They say there has not been traffic signs for more than six months, and when you are new to the area you would not know to yield.

Margaret Barnes says traffic has picked up in the area with new housing and the park being built. She says people cut through the area and speed through the intersection.

"We've seen some almost accidents but if we weren't looking carefully I'm sure that we could have had an accident," Barnes said.

Tuesday Leland Town Manager David Hollis said it the responsibility of Nathan Sanders, the developer of Westgate, to put up street signs. Sanders has not returned our calls and e-mail.

It still is unclear who put up the stop sign.
